Maya Madere was born and raised in Austin, Texas. She began climbing competitively on Team ATX at age 13. Her favorite climbing area is Hueco Tanks, Texas, but Smith Rock, Oregon is a close second. In 2016 she placed first at ABS Youth Nationals and third in bouldering at Youth Worlds. Her long term goals include competing in the World Cup circuit and climbing V13 and 5.14b. She loves bouldering and sport climbing, especially on granite or basalt. Aside from climbing, she enjoys reading, writing, windsurfing, riding unicycles, playing the violin, spelunking, camping, food, art, basketball, and getting lost in the woods.
Favorite Movie? Star Wars.
What did you do growing up that got you into trouble? I climbed everything, including trees, buildings, telephone poles, stair railings, museum exhibits, my older cousins, fences, and vehicles.
Do you have a spirit animal? Yes, the Mantis Shrimp. It has 3 pupils in each eye and can punch with the speed of a bullet.
